Edith Conyer Obituary

Edith Davis Kelly Conyer was born on July 22, 1931 in Fort Motte, SC.  She was the daughter of the late Ellison Davis, Jr. and Mellie Ellis Davis.

Mrs. Conyer was educated in the public schools of  Calhoun County, South Carolina and at a young age, she accepted Christ and was Baptized at New Bethany Baptist Church, Fort Motte, SC.  She was married to the late Sam Kelly.

She left South Carolina in pursuit of a better life.  She was employed in various manufacturing capacities until her retirement. While in New York, she met and married the late John Conyer, Sr.  They had one son. John Jr. that preceded her in death.

A civic minded individual, Edith worked faithfully with the Board of Elections for 28 years.  She never missed an opportunity to exercise her civic duty until this year when her health declined and she was limited due to the pandemic. She served her community in many ways such the Tenants Association, and other community initiatives.

Mrs. Conyer was a member of the Greater Universal Baptist Church, Bronx, NY and faithfully served in various capacities, such as, the Mother’s Board, Willing Workers, Deaconess Board, and other church ministries.

Those who were well acquainted with Edith knew that she loved the Bronx and the residents. She was very independent and could be seen throughout the neighborhood handling her own affairs.  Everyday she would go to the senior center for breakfast, lunch and conversation until the pandemic closed the center.  She loved to fellowship with her friends and go to various casino trips, most recently Yonkers, NY.  She was an avid news fan and stayed abreast of current events.

Her heavenly call was answered on, December 10, 2020 at her home in Bronx, NY.  Preceding her in death was her parents,  brothers, Ellison Davis, III. and Abbie R. Davis; sisters, Emma D. Bell, Florence Davis, and Sara Alice Dickerson; paternal grandparents, Ellison Davis, Sr and Edith Sanders Davis Smith; maternal grandparents, Thomas “Papa” Ellis and Emma Sanders Ellis.

Those left to cherish her memories are her loving and devoted daughter, Mellie (Ray) Keitt of St. Matthews, SC; son, Sam Kelly, Jr of Buffalo, NY; one granddaughter whom she cherished, Sharon Keitt Bennett, of St. Matthews, SC; two great granddaughters, Ada Paige Bennett of North Hollywood, CA and April Renee’ Bennett, of Asheville, NC;  one great grandson, Jeffery Bennett, Jr. of Elloree, SC; one great-great granddaughter, Jeryannv;  one sister, Amy Davis Benjamin of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Thomas Davis of Columbia, SC;  sister-in- law, Rose Davis of Brooklyn, NY; three nieces, Brenda Bull of Charlotte, NC, Tyhessia Pinkney of St. Matthews, SC and LaShawn Morgan (Demetraus) of Fort Meade, MD; five nephews, Ellison Davis, IV of Brooklyn, NY, Garden Davis (Ilene) of Summerville, SC, Leonardo Bell of Bronx, NY, and Terence Mack Davis (Keashia) of Wando, SC along with a host of grand & great-grand nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and  friends that will all miss her dearly.
