Emilia Cancel

Emilia Cancel was born on August 19, 1946 in the Bronx, New York in Lincoln Hospital to Rosaura Cancel and Albert Brown.  She attended P.S. 63 and Junior High School 55.  She then went on to attend FIT as a designer and clothing major.  She later went on to attend the College of New Rochelle where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Emily, as she was fondly called had a career that covered multiple human service positions.  She worked as a Para Professional, Personal Specialist, Case Manager for ACS, Case Manager at Promessa for HIV Population and a Case Manager at Page Apartments.

She was fondly known as the Major of Fulton Avenue.  She created the tenant association for her building preventing the building from being condemned.  She took care of neighbors and children.  If you needed a place to lay your head or a hot meal, Emily would find a way to provide it for you.  She was a dedicated volunteer at the church food pantry on Tuesdays.  She would help to provide support in getting any benefits you may have needed making sure things were properly done for you.

Emily’s health began to decline in March of 2020 and was hospitalized at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.  She was tired and closed her eyes for the final time on Thursday, November 26, 2020 on Thanksgiving Day at 12:15 P.M.

She is preceded her in death by her brother, Albert (Mickey) Brown, Sr.

She leaves to mourn her daughter, Wanda; son, Clyde (Son-Son); mother, Rosaura Cancel; sister, Miriam Brown; brother, Ronald Brown and Eugene Tompkins (Sonny); grandchildren, Joey, Jason, Erica, Diamond, Skye, Janiya; great grandchildren, Samia, Jason Jr., Josiah; son-in-law, Darnell and a host of family and friends.
