Havis McCoy Obituary

Havis Maud McCoy was born on February 3rd, 1929, in the small town of Hopewell, Jamaica to the late Violet and William Harding. She was born into a large family where she was the tenth of eleven children. Six older brothers, Ernest, Leonard, Eugene, Harold, Sedley, and Lindel, three older sisters, Vandamore, Dellis, Louise, and one younger sister Nella. Although much of her childhood is unbeknownst to us, in adulthood during her time in her native country, she gave birth to four beautiful children named Alfred, Desmond, Derrick, and Lillian.

Havis migrated to the United States in December of 1966 and found work as a Nanny in New Jersey. Soon after she met Jonathan McCoy, also known as George. The two fell in love and on January 31st, 1971, they married and had one daughter named Jennifer. Havis and George remained married through sickness and health for 38 years until George's death on March 25th, 2009.

Havis was a very loving, playful, and humorous person. She brought joy and laughter to everyone she met and was also a big lover of animals. Over the years she owned and cared for animals of all kinds; cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, and even a pigeon named Blackie that would come by often to be fed. Around her neighborhood, which she lived in for over 50 years, everyone who knew her would say she and her dog Bruno went everywhere together. Even at the time of her passing, she still had a cat named Socks. Not only did she love animals, but she also loved kids. The children in her life who were lucky enough to have known her, remember her most for her famous karate chop move. It’s safe to say her presence was deeply felt. As she got older, she enjoyed watching soap operas such as, “Days of Our Lives”, “All My Children”, and especially “The Young and The Restless”.

Not long after the loss of her husband, Havis’ health began to decline. She was diagnosed with dementia but thankfully she received around-the-clock care from her two lovely aides Bridget and Elizabeth. They cared for her just as if she were their mother. Havis passed away peacefully in her home with her aide Bridget and loving daughter Jennifer by her side on Tuesday, December 26th, 2023.

Havis Maud McCoy was preceded in death by her siblings, Ernest, Leonard, Eugene, Harold, Sedley, Lindel, Vandamore, and Dellis.

Havis is survived by her sisters, Louise and Nella Harding; five children, Alfred, Desmond, Derrick, Lillian Johnson, and Jennifer McCoy; fifteen grandchildren, Alfred Deas Sr. (Sharon), Kevin Johnson (Alexis), Kawana Jean-Pierre (Isaac), Valencia Johnson, Stacee Rumph, Samantha Johnson, Alesia Johnson, Andrew Grant (Torrianne), Milani Lawrence, Maisha Phauls, Aaliyah Hyman, Steven Johnson, Shaylor Wynn (Michael), Victoria Canteen, and Sabrina Johnson; fifteen great-grandchildren, Leaja Deas, Alfred Deas Jr., Dante Braxton, Amaya Deas, Chance Phauls, Jamal Belle, Cannon Phauls, Joshua Jean-Pierre, Heaven Bayne, Chloe Phauls, Aiden Deas, Kash Robertson, Lillian Jean-Pierre, Tyrell Hudson, and Savanna Johnson.

Havis ran her race and finished her course but the impact she made will live on through the rich legacy she has left. She will be missed dearly.
