Herbert Mellette was born on August 31st, 1943 in Sumter, SC to Mr. Bernie and Mrs. Alaminah Mellette. Bernie and Alaminah had two children, Herbert and Robert Mellette. Herbert attended the Walton Gamble HS in Sumter, South Carolina. As the eldest of two children, he began working in the fields of Sumter and would contribute his earnings to the household.
He would carry on this same responsibility into adulthood ultimately beginning his family. Herbert met the late Rovina Mellette in 1959 in Sumter, SC and had their first child together Dorothy (Neicy) Mellette in September 1960 in Sumter, SC. A month later, on October 7, 1960 he married Rovina. A few months following their marriage, he and Rovina relocated to the Bronx, New York where together they would create the most memorable family. While in the Bronx, Herbert would work as a superintendent until he retired and that was only one of the many hats he wore.
On the weekends he would sell newspapers and teach each of his grandchildren how to earn some sort of income. If there is anything you can remember about Herbert, is his hard-work ethic, sense of humor and his family. His family meant the world to him, as he did to them.
Herbert now joins in heaven his beloved wife, Rovina Mellette; parents, Bernie and Alaminah Mellette; brother, Robert Mellette; daughter, Cynthia Mellette; and grandson Kareem Lilly.
He is survived by seven children, Dorothy (Neicy) Mellette, CloSandra Mellette, Denise (Dee-Dee) Mellette, Sheila Mellette, Patricia Mellette, Herbert Mellette Jr., and Cynthia Mellette; one son-in-law, Carl Ellis; 21 grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends. Herbert will always be remembered for the love and generosity he shared with his family and friends. He is loved always and will be missed forever.
